Siblings Do GARTH

Standard

Y’all…Garth Brooks is hands down the best performer I’ve ever seen. From first note to last, he was energetic,Sisters! engaging and entertaining, giving the audience everything we wanted. Perhaps there is something magical about being born on February 7…I’m just saying.

On Saturday, six of my favorite siblings (me and Kourt, Haley and Ashley, and Blake and Andee) took the Toyota Center by storm to see Garth Brooks perform in Houston for the first time in 17 years. I’ve long counted having not seen Garth perform live as a regret in life (granted, I was only 12 the last time he was in town), so as soon as the concert announcement was made I KNEW I was going, no matter what. Luckily, the concert was at Toyota Center and my CEO has VIP ticket access to all TC events, thanks to his longtime status as a Houston Rockets season ticket holder (thanks again, Phil!) – I emailed him weeks before tickets went on sale, begging him to send me his VIP access code. Of course, he did – and we scored 10th row center seats! It was FANTASTIC.

Sibling Love!

I knew the show was going to be amazing when Garth opened with “I have been in your position and have come to hear one of my old favorite acts perform. I know you want to hear the old stuff. Sure, I have a new album coming out – but we’re not going to play any of that. We’re going to play the good stuff! The stuff you love!” GOOD MAN, GARTH. GOOD MAN.

If there is a Garth Brooks song you can name off the top of your head, he played it – and every single audience member GARTH!sang along to every word of every verse. Yes, even the bonus verses found only when Garth sings live! I correctly predicted the first and last Garth songs to be played (HOLLA!) and enjoyed every second of his 2 hour and 15 minute performance. I was exhausted just watching him run around – and laughed at his fat/old guy jokes (made as his own expense) :)

Are You There, Blog? It’s Me, Brittney.

Standard

So it’s been almost a  year two years (math is hard) since the last time the ol’ blog was updated and nothing of any significance has happened. OH WAIT…we got another dog, went on our dream European vacation, started trying to have a baby, found out that my infertility issues meant we’d require IVF treatments, went on some fab vacations, miraculously got pregnant, AND SO MUCH MORE!

I realize it’s impossible to catch up on a year’s worth of life in just a few bullets (because really, who wants to read more than that?), but  here’s a best effort…or at least an effort. Note: I will save The Infertility Saga for another time.

  • Summer 2013 – We went to Michigan to surprise Chad’s stepdad, Brent, for his 50th birthday party! We also went to Florida for the first annual Family Feud Fantasy Football Draft!
  • Fall 2013 – We got Abby! Yes, we added a second corgi to our family and she’s obsessed with Chad. It works out nicely because Cooper is obsessed with me and now we each have our own furball :) Abby is now 8.5 and Cooper is just over 2; both weigh about 34 pounds :)
  • December 2013 – CHAD TURNED 30! I lied and told him we were going to Mexico, but we actually went to pick up his family and best friend at the airport for a long weekend of fun :) Although I know Chad was slightly disappointed in not going to Mexico, I know he was truly surprised and thrilled his family was in town. I also threw him a surprise party that weekend, so it was kind of a big deal (he has his work cut out for him when I turn 30 in 2016!)
  • February 2014 – I turned 28 and decided it was time to think about starting a family!
  • June 2014 – WE WENT ON OUR DREAM VACATION TO EUROPE! Two weeks in Rome, Paris and Barcelona. Hands down, our favorite spot was Paris. It was the most beautiful, romantic and tasty city EVER (and of course, the most expensive). We agree that if we ever win the lottery or come into a large sum of money, we’d have a house in Paris :)
  • October 2014 – We went to Chicago with Chad’s best friend Joe and his girlfriend Ali – IT WAS AWESOME. We did all of the big touristy things in 36 hours – Hancock Building, Sears Tower, museums, deep dish pizza, visited the bar from The League, Second City, architecture cruise, amazing food…it was a whirlwind!
  • December 2014 – Haley and Mike got married and we celebrated with a ton of folks I hadn’t seen in forever!
  • January 9-10, 2015 – I went on a work trip to Santa Fe, NM and didn’t feel well.
  • January 11, 2015 – WE FOUND OUT WE’RE PREGNANT!!! Go ahead and tell God something can’t be done – he’ll LOL at you.
  • March 2015 – We went to Michigan to visit Chad’s family and had a great time!  Yoga, games and all of the usual fun (minus the booze, for me).
  • April 27, 2015 – I felt the baby move (for sure) for the first time!
  • May 7, 2015 – Chad felt the baby move for the first time!
  • May 8, 2015 – OUR GENDER REVEAL IS TOMORROW, Y’ALL!!
  • May 9, 2015 – My first Mother’s Day :)

There are approximately 11 million photos I could post from the above adventures, but I know which one you really want :)

Part of the Woodlands Church Family!

Standard

That’s right – our family has grown…by about 17,000! Today, we joined (well, I re-joined) Woodlands Church. And we are SO excited about it! We really feel right at home here and love Pastor Kerry Shook – we love a pastor/church that is committed to and unapologetic about the Truth of the Word – and that’s exactly Pastor Kerry. The church is so warm and inviting, with so many opportunities to serve – we’re excited to get plugged in!

The only sad part is that two of our good friends, Jennifer and Aaron, moved from Houston to Austin recently, so they are no longer at the church! Jennifer was the volunteer coordinator for Small World (the little babies – crawlers) and did such an amazing job there. I’ve signed up to help out in Small World because someone has to help fill her shoes! Though she’s so awesome, it’ll take at least 5 people to do that :)

We’ve also volunteered to host a small group in our home, beginning the week after Easter! We’ll be all moved in by then and can’t wait to start teaching and sharing the Word in our home. We hope that our house will be one where God is glorified and exalted every day! And we can’t wait to meet new couples through Bible study. In fact, one of the women’s ministry and one of the men’s ministry leaders we met today were SO excited to introduce us to a young, newly married couple! Yay for new friends!

We talked to the missions pastor about going to China, since we really have a heart for that nation. While Woodlands Church isn’t yet in the stage where they can take teams to China, they’re developing relationships and partners and hope to begin sending teams in 4-5 years. We hope to be on those teams! So we’ll be praying about missions in China and will also be listening for God to lead us to other parts of the world in the meantime.

If any of our friends are looking for a church or are in town visiting, we’d love to take you to Woodlands Church!

The Game of Life

Standard

Oy – I thought last week was great! This week has taken the cake – and it isn’t even over yet!

Chad put it best last night when he said it’s like we’re playing The Game of Life…and WINNING! It seems we’re spinning all the right numbers and landing on all the right spaces this week. Not that we really have anything to do with it – to GOD be the glory! We’ve prayed earnestly for these things to happen in His timing, and that’s exactly what’s happening.

The week started off on Sunday – a great message at church, an impromptu lunch date and then we drove out to Cleveland to meet our brand new PUPPY! His name is Cooper and he was born on February 7 – that’s right, we share a birthday! He’s a pure bred Corgi (the breed we’ve wanted for so long!) and can officially come home with us once he’s old enough – April 2.

Then on Monday we got the news we’d be anxiously awaiting for 8 days – WE GOT THE HOUSE!!! We’re officially under contract for our first home in Spring, Texas. Things get REALLY real when you start writing big checks! The inspection is Saturday, so we’re praying for nothing but good news.

Tuesday was Mardi Gras – we didn’t do anything to celebrate, but it’s just a fun time of year. Thanks to our NOLA friends for sharing your pictures!

On Wednesday, a group of friends gathered at a favorite Irish pub and pizza joint (just trust me on this – it’s delicious) to celebrate my belated birthday. It was great to see some people I hadn’t seen in a very long time – we laughed, we ate, we drank – a solid Wednesday night!

Today is Valentine’s Day AND Chad’s first day at his new job!!! We’ll exchange cards and such tonight, but will forgo the day-of celebration since now we both have to go to bed early :) I am SO proud of him and excited for him – I can’t wait to hear about his first day when I get home tonight!

Tomorrow is when we’ll actually celebrate Valentine’s Day – we got a hotel in The Woodlands and plan to grab some Chinese takeout and just relax, just the two of us. Sounds pretty perfect if you ask me!

And then Saturday, as I mentioned, is inspection day! And that night we’re having dinner with the Brogans. HUZZAH!

This has been a GREAT week!!!

A Big Week Ahead!!

Standard

Greetings, blog readers! It’s been a while since my last post, but that isn’t for a lack of on goings! And a lot of big stuff is happening this week, so I’ll catch you up :)

First, I resigned from my job at Acxiom at the beginning of the month. I know, crazy! But I’m beyond excited to start my new job at my old company. That’s right! I’m going back to Pierpont Communications to work on several PR accounts. PR is my first and true love, and I can’t wait to get back to it. I start Monday!

Second, Chad takes his final teaching certification test on Tuesday! He’s one small step from being completely certified, which is a great thing, since he’s been offered a teaching job! I won’t go into specifics since the contract hasn’t been executed just yet, but its teaching math at an excellent high school nearby…

Third…and by “nearby” I mean near the house we put an offer on today! Mom (our realtor) submitted the paperwork, but we won’t hear back until at least Monday, since the home is a foreclosure and foreclosure agents only work M-F from 9-5. We are praying this is THE place for us! Expect a longer, more detailed post about the house if we get it :) We put a bid on another house a few weeks ago, but lost it :( It was heartbreaking! And you KNOW how I am a House Hunter connoisseur – they never show the people who lose the bids on that show! And they also never show the people who have to look at dozens of houses over several trips – like we did. When it’s all said and done, I think we’ve looked at about 20-24 houses (right now). God willing that number will not go up!

Fourth, Thursday is my birthday! That’s right, I’m turning the big 2-7 :) I”m excited to celebrate – I just need to figure out how! Though I think pizza and beer are on the agenda – and you KNOW how I feel about agendas! Love.

And finally, there’s this little thing called the Super Bowl tomorrow! Being the football lover that I am, the Super Bowl is like a holiday for me – and a great way to start off the week! Though I may have to call it a night early, since I plan to wake up early and hit the gym before going to work on Monday morning.

So there you have it! A recap of what we’ve been up to for the past few weeks. I’ll keep you posted on the house hunt!

A New Year, A New Chapter

Standard

Well, 2013 is officially here! It’s shaping up to be quite the year for us – we have so many dreams for the year and know that it’s going to be one for the record books.

Ringing in the New Year TEXAS STYLE!

Ringing in the New Year TEXAS STYLE!

Of course, moving back to Houston on December 29, 2012, is the biggest change for 2012. Chad is changing careers and we’re saving up for our dream home in the Woodlands (God willing). And if a change of careers and locations isn’t enough, we hope to add one more to our family this year – a puppy! :)

We rang in the New Year with delicious Tex-Mex, Mexican beer (for Chad) and a margarita (for me), a movie (This is 40) and watching the ball drop from the comfort of the couch (I’m not feeling well, so we didn’t go out). It was so great to have just the two of us, spending time together and celebrating where life has brought us in the past year – and dreaming about where it will take us in 2013!

We hope everyone had a great time ringing in the New Year, and that 2013 brings you all the joy and prosperity you deserve!

Happy (Belated) Birthday, Weatherman!

Standard

That’s right! Yesterday was Chad’s 29th birthday, and it was a great one :)

Happy birthday, baby!

Happy birthday, baby!

Because he had to work, we did most of the celebrating on Friday night. We had dinner and drinks at Flying Saucer, then headed over to Willy D’s (a dueling piano bar) for some entertainment. We were definitely entertained…but mostly bythe other patrons! There were a lot of interesting characters and questionable decisions made around us, but all in all it was a good night. When the drunk people started recognizing Chad and spreading the word to one another, we decided it was best we head home for the night :) As luck would have it, we got home right at midnight, so I sang him Happy Birthday (not like Marilyn Monroe) and we ate his birthday ice cream cake while watching The League. A perfect ending to the night!

mmm...cake!

mmm…cake!

On Saturday, his ACTUAL birthday, we slept in (GLORIOUS) and then had brunch at B-Side, a local hole-in-the-wall. I had some AMAZING blueberry pancakes, and Chad had the biscuit mountain – two

homemade biscuits topped with hash browns, sausage cream gravy and eggs over easy. It was super Southern, y’all! We came home to play Chad’s new Xbox Kinect (thanks, family-in-love!), and I got sweaty and

sore. Which, in hindsight, wasn’t the best of ideas – since I ran a 5k a few hours later! But I made it home in time to make one of Chad’s favorite meals for his birthday dinner – stromboli. And of course, more birthday ice cream cake! In case you’re wondering, it was chocolate cake, mint chocolate chip ice cream, white icing and fudge decorations on top. DELISH!!

One of the funniest things that happened this weekend was when Chad said “This is the first birthday you’ve spent with me in a long time. Definitely the first one since we moved to Arkansas.” (Last year I was in Cary, North Carolina, for a work conference at SAS.) That seemed off to me, but I couldn’t pinpoint where I was for his birthday in 2010, so I let it go. In the middle of my shower, it hit me: IN 2010 WE WERE ON A CRUISE, GETTING ENGAGED, FOR HIS BIRTHDAY! Point: Weather Wife :)

So happy birthday to my amazing, wonderful, loving and kind husband – I am so blessed to be your wife, and I look forward to a lifetime of birthdays to celebrate together. I love you!!
