The Game of Life

Standard

Oy – I thought last week was great! This week has taken the cake – and it isn’t even over yet!

Chad put it best last night when he said it’s like we’re playing The Game of Life…and WINNING! It seems we’re spinning all the right numbers and landing on all the right spaces this week. Not that we really have anything to do with it – to GOD be the glory! We’ve prayed earnestly for these things to happen in His timing, and that’s exactly what’s happening.

The week started off on Sunday – a great message at church, an impromptu lunch date and then we drove out to Cleveland to meet our brand new PUPPY! His name is Cooper and he was born on February 7 – that’s right, we share a birthday! He’s a pure bred Corgi (the breed we’ve wanted for so long!) and can officially come home with us once he’s old enough – April 2.

Then on Monday we got the news we’d be anxiously awaiting for 8 days – WE GOT THE HOUSE!!! We’re officially under contract for our first home in Spring, Texas. Things get REALLY real when you start writing big checks! The inspection is Saturday, so we’re praying for nothing but good news.

Tuesday was Mardi Gras – we didn’t do anything to celebrate, but it’s just a fun time of year. Thanks to our NOLA friends for sharing your pictures!

On Wednesday, a group of friends gathered at a favorite Irish pub and pizza joint (just trust me on this – it’s delicious) to celebrate my belated birthday. It was great to see some people I hadn’t seen in a very long time – we laughed, we ate, we drank – a solid Wednesday night!

Today is Valentine’s Day AND Chad’s first day at his new job!!! We’ll exchange cards and such tonight, but will forgo the day-of celebration since now we both have to go to bed early :) I am SO proud of him and excited for him – I can’t wait to hear about his first day when I get home tonight!

Tomorrow is when we’ll actually celebrate Valentine’s Day – we got a hotel in The Woodlands and plan to grab some Chinese takeout and just relax, just the two of us. Sounds pretty perfect if you ask me!

And then Saturday, as I mentioned, is inspection day! And that night we’re having dinner with the Brogans. HUZZAH!

This has been a GREAT week!!!

THIS is why I Plan

Standard

It’s been said a time or two that I need to loosen up and be more spontaneous. Yes, I can be a little high-strung, obsessive and anal about things going JUST RIGHT, but I still manage to have a heck of a lot of fun during the process.

Last night, I tried to be spontaneous. I suggested to The Hubs that we go bowling for a casual, carefree and cheap night out, and after a bit of convincing, he agreed. So, we hopped in the Corolla and headed to the lanes. We get there and it’s 60% (or more) empty, but we can’t bowl because lanes have been promised to leagues and large groups that will be there in an hour. Undeterred, I said “Fear not – I know where another bowling alley is!” so it was back to the Corrolla. We arrive at bowling alley #2 only to hear the exact same story. So much for spontaneity.

THIS, people, is why I plan. Normal Brittney would have called ahead to reserve a lane for an hour. She would have had this idea days before it was time to go. Normal Brittney would not have been saddened by the inability to bowl (which, frankly, she is TERRIBLE at, but it’s comical to try). Normal Brittney would have ensured the right to bowl.

On a related note – who knew bowling was so popular?? Did I go in a time machine to 1973?? I mean seriously!

Oh well. We ended up going home, making dinner and watching Modern Family. And playing the new craps app on Chad’s iPhone. Contain your jealousy.

What a Difference a Year Makes!

Standard

Wow! First of all, I have the most amazing husband, family and friends. You guys really know how to make a girl feel special, and your birthday calls, texts, tweets, FB messages, IMs, cards, gifts and food were all ACES in my book! You rock. Seriously.

As you know, yesterday was my 26th birthday, and I’m officially closer to 30 than I am to 20. But, like a fine wine, I get better with age, so BRING IT ON, life! :) I digress. This year’s birthday was one of the best yet – and a complete 180 from last year’s monstrosity.

Last year, my mom, sister and nephew booked flights to Little Rock for my birthday. We were all going to spend time together in the city I’d called home for 4 months – it was going to be a jolly good time, I tell ya. And my brand new fiance was going to be there too – what wasn’t to love? SNOW. That’s what. Snow was NOT invited to my 25th birthday party, but it crashed any way, dumping 7 inches of the powdery white stuff all over Central Arkansas, effectively shutting down all forms of transportation (including the airport) and forcing Chad to go to work. So what did I do? I sat in my apartment and cried, alone. I cried because I was in a new city, away from everyone I’d ever known and had no friends. I cried because this was my first birthday away from Texas and because my perfectly laid plans had been smashed to pieces. I cried because that’s what you do in a quarter-life crisis.

This year, however, was AWESOME! I woke up and started my 26th year with a nice run. I came home to find my birthday presents from my HUSBAND (yay for the first married birthday!) all laid out – he couldn’t wait until dinner to give them to me. Over the course of the day, I had countless messages in every medium possible (thanks again!), two delicious birthday meals, birthday cupcakes from my Junior League friends and even more gifts from family waiting to be opened. All in all, it was a GREAT day, thanks to all of you!

So the next time you think things are particularly crummy, I say “just give it some time!” Turns out that’s all I needed to go from one of the worst birthdays EVER to one of the BEST birthdays ever!

Love you all!

(And for those of you wondering, Chad got me two books and the Coach Poppy perfume I’ve had my eye on for months – thanks babe!)

Totally Bragging

Standard

If you’ll let me, I just have to brag on my husband :)

As you know, we spent time apart. And I didn’t really care for that (even though I did have fun).

After taking the crack-of-dawn flight from Austin to Little Rock in order to make it to work on time, I headed home absolutely EXHAUSTED. All I wanted to do was put my sweat pants on, take out my contacts and watch Monday Night Football until I fell asleep. Well, before I even got to any of that, I got to this:

SCORE.

That’s right, pink roses – my favorite – and dark chocolate/mint chocolates from my hubby. How awesome is that?! Just shows how much he knows, loves, respects and cares for me :) But that wasn’t all – he’d also spent three hours making me a homemade dinner – chicken breasts with Salt Lick BBQ sauce and steamed potatoes and veggies. And it was waiting on a candlelit table. With jazz music playing in the background. DYING. So romantic!

After all that, he encouraged me to go upstairs and put on my sweatpants, wash off my makeup and take out my contacts so that we could watch football until I fell asleep sitting next to him on the couch. It’s not every husband who ENCOURAGES his wife to get un-fancy. But mine is THAT awesome :)

Have you hugged your husband/man friend yet today? You should. They deserve it!

365 Days

Standard

One year ago today, I packed up all of my earthly belongings and drove away from my childhood home, where my entire family lives on a single street in a city with a population of 291, en route to Little Rock, Arkansas. Chad and I had been dating for just over three years, living 6.5 hours apart the entire time. I’d secured myself a job and a place to live, and had it on good authority that Chad would propose before the year was up (read: I made him promise he would propose before the year was up before I agreed to move out of state).

So many things have happened in the past 365 days – it’s almost unreal. I started a new job. I moved – twice. We joined our first church together. I got engaged! Chad and I took our first vacation together (the engagement cruise). I planned a wedding. I made approximately 16 round-trip flights to Houston for family, holiday and wedding-related things (both my wedding and others). WE GOT MARRIED. We honeymooned in Mexico for the most amazing week of my life. I made significant accomplishments at work. The list goes on and on…

When I look back on it, there is a huge mixture of emotions that I can recall. Lots of nerves when I first moved here. Joy from seeing Chad several times a week, rather than once every 8 weeks. Pure elation and shock when Chad proposed. Stress when it came to wedding planning. A complete surrealism as I walked down the aisle. Total relaxation on the pristine beaches of Playa del Carmen – and so much more.

Yes, it has been quite a year for me/us. It’s amazing how so much can change in such a short time. Let’s all just make sure we’re taking the time to ENJOY life!

Here’s the past 365 days in a slideshow (just the highlights!):

Married!!!

Standard

Hello, everyone! I’m sure you could tell from the two-week hiatus that something big was up – and it was! Our wedding! After months of planning and years of dreaming, the Big Day was finally here – and it was everything we’ve ever wanted and so much more.

I could never begin to thank our friends and family for all of their love and support throughout the wedding planning and execution process – I can only hope that you walked away thinking it was all worth it! We are settling into married life well (despite my working 17 hour days the first week of living in the real world as a married woman), but of course the journey will continue on forever. Here’s a bit of what’s been going on in our lives since July 15, 2011:

1. WE GOT MARRIED. It was the most beautiful ceremony in the most beautiful church on the planet. Don’t believe me? Head on over to my Facebook page and check out the pictures I’ve been tagged in recently :) And for those of you in the Houston area looking for wedding venues – I highly recommend Woodlands Church and Belle Rose Maison. They were beyond amazing to work with!

2. WE WENT ON OUR HONEYMOON. Oh Mexico. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways… I mean really you can’t say anything bad about an all-inclusive, adults-only 4-star resort. Our room was right on the beach with a balcony that overlooked the ocean, and we could leave the doors and windows open to hear the waves crashing. There were 9 restaurants, 2 swim-up bars and endless ways to entertain ourselves. Can I go back now? Oh – and did I mention we got upgraded to first class on the way there? Because we got upgraded to first class on the way there. THAT was awesome!

3. WE CAME BACK TO ARKANSAS. Where I worked 17-hour days preparing to announce the new CEO of my company. Despite the long hours, everything went off without a hitch and it was an amazing professional growth opportunity. I am thankful that I was able to be a part of it, but I am also thankful it’s over :)

I think that about sums it up! But perhaps the pictures would help better…

Fancy Date Night

Standard

Earlier this week, Chad and I talked about having a nice night out on Friday. We’d talked about visiting 1620, deemed Little Rock’s “most romantic restaurant,” but weren’t sure if we had the spare cash because of the rapidly-approaching cruise. However, by the grace of the Groupon, we were able to get a $60 gift card for just $30 for 1620. Clearly it was a sign :)

So we got all dolled up and headed to dinner. I love an excuse to get dressed up, and it definitely gave both of us something to look forward to all week! Plus, I love showing off Chad in a suit – sure, he wears one every day for work, but it’s better when he’s wearing it for me and not for his job :)

I had the filet mingnon with a lobster bernaise sauce, and Chad had shrimp and scallops. For dessert, Chad had caramel cheesecake – of course – and I had chocolate creme brulee – of course! It was a great meal and great atmosphere, but the best part of all was the company – hands down :)

It’s not often we treat ourselves to a nice night out, but we really enjoyed doing so. It allowed us to reconnect and really just enjoy each other, away from distractions and the “everyday” life. I can’t wait until the cruise so that we can have 4 days of fun and “just us” time!

Good looking couple, no? :)
