Photographers, Nurseries and Registries – OH MY!

Standard

Lots has happened in the world of Baby Prep this week!

I’ve officially booked our maternity and newborn photographer – Melissa Parsons! I really liked her soft, natural photos and hope to have some beautiful weather for the maternity session on August 16. I’ll be 35 weeks and nice and round by then, no doubt about it! I am definitely worried about the heat, but we’ll make dLuke's Beddingo. And I’m pleased to report that she fell short of the budget by $25, so Chad was thrilled as well :)

Additionally, we ordered Luke’s bedding and it will arrive later today! It usually takes two weeks, but someone cancelled their order at the last minute and she had an extra crib sheet and skirt lying around, so she overnighted them to us for free. Excited to see them tonight! We’ll take them to Lowe’s so that they can match the mint and grey for the paint we’ll use for the nursery. WHOO HOO!

Finally, the registries (Target and Babies R Us) are done! Well, at least I think they are. If any experienced mamas see I’ve left something off, please let me know!

YAY BABIES!

Standard

Here is a list of friends who are expecting right now (and I know about their pregnancies and they’re public knowledge):

  • Jackie (boy/girl twins – due in October!)
  • Erin (TBD – due in December!)
  • Nicki (baby girl – due in October!)
  • Kelley (TBD – due in September!)

I still have several ladies on my prayer list for pregnancies and healthy babies, but it’s exciting to celebrate with these mamas! Jackie I’ve known since middle school, Erin is a sweet friend I met in Little Rock who is currently living in Germany, Nicki is also a sweet friend I met in Little Rock and Kelley is my former cardio hip-hop workout teacher/Houston Texans cheerleader. A diverse and amazing group of women!

Congrats, mamas! I promised Erin I’d be the voice of “it gets better” when our timezone difference is no longer an issue (because we’ll both be on Baby Time), so who wants to be that for me???

Bye Bye, Non-Maternity Bottoms

Standard

Well, today is the day – at 21 weeks, 4 days pregnant, I am no longer comfortable in my regular black pencil skirts. I haven’t tried to put jeans on since my 20 week photo (because it’s already too hot for jeans), but I can pretty much assume my jeans would also not be comfortable.

I’m told that it’s best to just embrace the maternity bottoms and that I’ll wonder why I waited so long once I have them. This is probably going to be true, but we’ll know for sure when Nordstrom Rack opens at 10 a.m. :)

Updates

Standard

Yes, I’ve been a bit quiet lately…but don’t take that to mean nothing is going on! Last week was a little crazy for us – so crazy that I’ve not had time to blog about it!

Monday started with me getting a text from Mom that Papa was going to the ER. A few texts later, Mom calls to have a more serious conversation – she thinks Papa isn’t going to make it. Enter: hysterics. For anyone who doesn’t know, Papa is the “original” man in my life. I never met my father, and so Papa was my dad. For the first 10 years, I lived with him, next door to him or within 5 minutes from him. No lie. I was at his house every day after school, he picked me up from school every Friday on his motorcycle and every Wednesday we got pork fried rice from the same Chinese place (Wednesdays were his paydays). Papa and I are extremely close, and I felt like the world stopped when Mom told me he wasn’t doing well.

I am so lucky to have an amazing husband who knows what to say and do at the perfect time. Of course, he understands my relationship with Papa and immediately said “Pack a suitcase, we’re getting on the next flight to Houston – I don’t care how much it costs. And if the next flight won’t get us there faster than we can drive, I’ll drive the whole way.” He was there to hold me up when I physically couldn’t do it myself, and I am so thankful for that.

Mom assured me that there was no need to come down (this took a while), so we didn’t hit the road (or the skies). Thankfully, Papa got a little better each day last week and is now finally home from the hospital. He’s still not feeling 100%, but has come a very long way in a week. He’s lost quite a bit of weight (down to 105 from 130), so we’re not out of the woods. His kidneys have failed completely and he now must have dialysis treatments every other day. But the important thing is that he is still with us :)

We’ve also had some big news in other areas of our life, and while it’s too early to talk about it just yet, I want you all to know how much I appreciate your thoughts, prayers and well wishes this week :) We are extremely happy and thankful for the blessings God has given us and cannot wait for the next chapter in our life!

And finally – Payton. In his first week of school, he had to have a parent teacher conference for talking all the time (this is apparently hereditary). The next week, he choked a kid (or “play wrestling” as he claims). Needless to say it’s been a bit of a rough start to kindergarten – but he’ll adjust. He’s never had behavior problems before, so once kindergarten becomes a part of his normal routine, I’m confident he’ll dust off the behavior cobwebs. That, or we’ll ship him off to military school.

I was going to conclude there, but then I remembered my sister is going back to school to finish up her bachelor’s degree – YAY sissy! This is a GREAT decision, and if you ever need help with homework, you know who to call! If it’s English/writing, I got your back – and if it’s math/science, I will happily hand the phone to your brother-in-law :)

Hope to have more exciting news to share soon!

Cuddlin’ Babies

Standard

My friend Nicki and her husband had their first baby on Tuesday, and yesterday I had a chance to go visit mom, dad and baby Tucker at the hospital! Newborn babies are always so cute and cuddly, especially since they’re usually wrapped up burrito-style¬† like literal bundles of joy :)

Nicki, of course, looked amazing (as usual), but was all too ready to leave the hospital (they are to be discharged today). In her typical OCD fashion, as soon as she got back to her hospital room after the C-section, she asked the nurses to tidy the place up, as it was driving her crazy. You see now why we are friends!

But I know why you’re really here – too see cute baby pictures! So I will make you wait no longer:

Congrats Nicki and Jared!!

There Once Was an Old Man in a Van…

Standard

So, I dropped off my car at the repair shop this morning to get a new starter. I took the shop’s complimentary shuttle to work, which was of course driven by a sweet little old man with a hearing aide. After listening to his life story and yelling my answers to his questions (hearing aide, remember?), he asked me if I had any children – to which I replied “Not yet.”

He then proceeds to tell me about his best friend, who is an OB/GYN at Baptist Hospital here in LR. He tells me how amazing of a doctor and caretaker this man is, and that his granddaughter is the RN in the delivery room for this doctor – so my baby would be in great hands with his BFF and granddaughter at the helm.

As if I were not sufficiently weirded out enough by this conversation, he then tells me his BFF OB/GYN’s name – AND IT’S THE GUY WHO TEACHES SUNDAY SCHOOL IN THE CLASSROOM NEXT DOOR TO OURS! I’m sorry sir, but there is NO WAY that I am letting a man that I see every week get all up in my lady bits – that’s just TMI for the both of us! Sure, he is a very nice man, with a lovely wife and outstanding children and grandchildren – I’m not denying that – but that does NOT negate the fact that he would know WAY too much about me if he were to deliver said baby/ies.

As I got out of the shuttle van, the little old man gave me his card and wrote his BFF OB/GYN’s name on the back, so that I wouldn’t forget. How kind :)

I Love Irony

Standard

I love the ironic juxtaposition of the two pieces of mail I received yesterday:

Booze and...babies??

One is a postcard from a local hospital that says YOU’RE INVITED…TO HAVE YOUR BABY WITH US!! The other is 4 drink coupons for Southwest Airlines. Clearly one of these parties knows me FAR BETTER than the other! :)

…That is, unless the two companies are plotting together, and they’re trying to get me drunk and then knocked up. Well, I’m on to your little plan, fellas! And I’m too smart for that!

And to Southwest, I have just one word: VEGAS!!! (101 days and counting!)
